(Kaieteur News) – The Ministry of Agriculture on Wednesday launched its new mobile application, ‘Farmer’s Connect,’ a digital platform designed to strengthen support services for farmers nationwide.
The platform delivers agricultural data and essential services through a single digital interface, allowing farmers to better plan operations, manage risks and improve overall output.
The app was unveiled at the National Culture Centre. It was developed in collaboration with the National Data Management Authority (NDMA) over a three-month period.
Among the features are real-time weather updates from the Guyana Hydrometeorological Office to assist with crop planning and risk reduction. Farmers can also request extension services and technical support from the ministry and its agencies directly through the app, eliminating the need for in-person visits.
It allows users to report flooding and identify the locations of drainage and irrigation infrastructure, including pumps and sluices, to help prevent potential losses. It also provides daily market price information across regions to support more strategic buying and selling decisions. The platform facilitates linkages by allowing producers to engage with potential purchasers and industry stakeholders, streamlining transactions and enhancing efficiency throughout the agricultural supply chain.
Additionally, the app includes a soil and crop suitability feature, offering access to a soil map that outlines soil types and recommended crops for each region. Farmers can upload images of crops or livestock to an Artificial Intelligence (AI) farming assistant for immediate feedback and guidance.
A digital library stocked with farming guides, tutorials, manuals and other educational materials is also available. Users can access information on upcoming events, workshops and seminars hosted by the ministry.
Delivering the keynote address, Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha, underscored the significance of the initiative, noting that it marks a shift away from the perception that farmers are not technologically savvy.
He referenced a recent study which found that out of 186 countries, Guyana is the only nation that produces enough food to feed its population across all seven food groups. “That is a tremendous achievement for us…we are not only producing enough to be self-sufficient but also producing to be the main producer of food in this hemisphere,” the minister stated.
Highlighting the sector’s role in national development, he said agriculture continues to stand alongside other key industries as a pillar of the economy. “When I say carry the nation, I mean it. You feed people, you support our export and you strengthen our economy,” Mustapha said.
While acknowledging Guyana’s growing reputation as an oil and gas producer earning billions of US dollars, Minister Mustapha stressed that the government remains committed to advancing the agriculture sector. He pointed to President Irfaan Ali’s vision of modernising the industry and attracting more people to the sector.
The ministry described the app as the first of its kind locally and a significant step in the government’s digital transformation agenda. It was stated that the platform goes beyond technology, serving as a tool to empower farmers, fisherfolk and agro-processors while strengthening and digitising one of the country’s most vital economic sectors.
