(Kaieteur News) – A 15-year-old girl is battling for her life in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the New Amsterdam Hospital after she was allegedly stabbed 25 times Tuesday evening in a vicious attack by her child’s father.
The injured mother has been identified as Tiana Chapman of Pepper Street, Edinburg Village, East Bank Berbice.
The teen’s lungs have been punctured and doctors have told relatives that “she is critical but stable.”
Relatives told Kaieteur News that when they visited the hospital Wednesday afternoon, Chapman was hooked up to an oxygen machine since she is unable to breathe independently.
Despite being pleased with the treatment the teen is receiving at the New Amsterdam Hospital, her relatives are hopeful that she would be transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital to receive advanced treatment.
“We don’t understand why they don’t take her to Georgetown Hospital since the condition is that critical,” a relative opined.
Reports are that on Tuesday night at about 20:00h, Chapman was attacked by Christopher Ali with whom she has had a tumultuous relationship, while at a friend’s home on Pepper Street.
“She got some bad stabs… it’s a lot. I heard it’s like 25 stab wounds she got,” a relative said Wednesday morning.
Family members disclosed that Ali had recently returned to Berbice after being away for several months. He was reportedly upset that Chapman had ended their relationship. During her pregnancy, relatives said, the teen endured physical abuse at his hands before ultimately cutting ties on the advice of family members.
Reports are that while at her friend’s house Ali attempted to lure Chapman outside by repeatedly sending her younger brother to call her.
“She said she wasn’t going anywhere. He ended up going in himself,” the relative recounted.
Chapman was stabbed multiple times about her body, including to her face and back.
After the attack, police in New Amsterdam pursued the suspect, but he managed to evade capture. He remains on the run, as investigations continue.
