Kaieteur Sports – Today’s match will feature huge implications as South Africa will be keen on upstaging what could be a historic run to the finals for the West Indies, should the Caribbean side brush aside today’s opponents ahead of their next crucial encounter versus the Indians.
This far, West Indies have been one of the best teams in the tournament having won all their games on the way to the Super8s, but will need to keep their feet on the pedal should they look to make a sprint to the finals, with two big challenges in the way; one in the form of South Africa today and India a few days from now.

Today’s match will have huge stakes as West Indies looking to maintain their momentum against a dangerous South Africa team.
West Indies’ engine room has been running smoothly this tournament, with Shimron Hetmyer continuing his rebirth with a master knock against Zimbabwe, Shai Hope returning to form with a few half-centuries during the crunch stages alongside Sherfane Rutheford, Rovman Powell, Jason Holder and Roston Chase being X-Factors with the bat.
Only Hetmyer (219 runs), second leading run-scorer behind Pakistan’s Sahibzada Farhan (283 runs), Hope and Rutherford have more than 150 runs and will be important pieces when faced with the likes of Lungi Ngidi, Kagiso Rabada, Keshav Maharaj, South Africa’s leading wicket-taker Marco Jansen most notably.
South Africa have been solid all-round, with most of their big players in form like David Miller, Quinton de Kock, Ryan Rickelton, Dewald Brevis, Captain Aiden Markram and Tristan Stubbs.
The win against India has further buffed the Proteas mindset as they are well aware of the Caribbean side’s unbeaten run, a credit to their bowling unit who have been equally good as the batsmen.
Left-arm pacer Jansen, fresh off a 4-fer against India will be the key today against two of the Windies main left-arm batters in Hetmyer and Rutherford.
Right-arm speedster Corbin Bosch has been brilliant all tournament, picking up wickets at a consistent rate and will have his work cut out today against a few big hitters.
Left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie only needed a few games to return to wicket-taking form, with 10 scalps to his name as well as the opportunity to claim the number one spot, should he bag another 4 wickets today.
Apart from the veteran Holder and Matthew Forde, West Indies have seen some good returns from Guyanese Shamar Joseph with ball and in the field.
The speedster has been among the wickets, as he continues to work himself back into top form but could use today’s match to really blow the door open and possibly keep South Africa away from the semis.
Given the form of both teams, their journey to this stage and the road ahead still being a potentially tough one; today’s battle will be a stern Test of who sticks to their game plan and who executes better on-field.
West Indies are the likely favorites while South Africa have been known in the past to fold in the deep stages of big tournaments.
Although both teams are tied on two points apiece, West Indies lead Group 1 with a better Net Run Rate, which adds a bit of an edge as they rally into today’s match at Ahmedabad bowling off from 9:30h.
