(Kaieteur News) – The government through the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) of Region Two is preparing to spend approximately $60 million to construct a new nursery school at Capoey Village, and extend the nursery building at Mainstay Village.
This is according to a recent invitation for bids issued by the Regional Administration which states that $35 million is estimated for the project at Capoey and $25 million is estimated for the works at Mainstay.
This publication understands that the Regional Administration was allocated a sum of $11.2 billion this year from the national budget and out of that $6.8 billion was set aside for education delivery.
As it relates to building nursery schools across the country, the government had reported previously that since taking office in 2020 they have built over 60 new nursery schools.
While nursery education is not compulsory in Guyana, education officials had noted that nursery education plays a vital role in laying the foundation for lifelong learning and development, and that in these early years, children develop essential cognitive, social, emotional, and motor skills that shape their future academic success and personal growth.
Former Education Minister, Priya Manickchand stated in the past that “While education in Guyana is not compulsory at nursery, we have seen that parents are so hungry, thirsty for their children to start learning and learning early and I think many of us and myself included, we don’t trust ourselves to deliver that education, we want trained teachers so your children can get the best.”
