(Kaieteur News) – A 77-year-old woman lost her life on Friday evening after being viciously attacked by a swarm of bees at Success, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
Dead is Mohadai Sankar, known as “Aunty Pamma,” a pensioner of Success. A 25-year-old woman who was also attacked during the incident remains hospitalised.
According to reports, the elderly woman was stung earlier in the day and later succumbed while receiving treatment at the Enmore Regional Hospital on Friday evening.
The Guyana Police Force, in a statement on Saturday said Sankar, who was visiting from the United States and staying at her local address, was attacked along with the 25-year-old woman and two other individuals. Investigators believe the swarm originated from the roof of a neighbouring house.
“The victims sustained multiple suspected bee stings during the incident,” police stated.
A video circulating on social media showed Sankar’s face and head completely covered by bees as she struggled during the ordeal. The visibly distressed pensioner appeared barely able to stand while attempting to seek refuge. Public-spirited residents rushed to her aid and transported her to the hospital, where she later died around 18:45hrs while undergoing medical treatment.
The 25-year-old victim was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where her condition has been listed as stable.
Sankar’s body has since been taken to Jerrick’s Funeral Home, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.
Police said the scene was visited by ranks, and personnel from the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI) were summoned to control the situation.
