(Kaieteur News) – One Communications (Guyana) Inc. on Thursday announced plans to invest US$25 million in domestic fibre infrastructure in 2026 to strengthen its multi-coverage network and build the capacity required to support the country’s rapidly expanding economy.
The company also intends to expand its fibre network along the East Coast, Linden, Berbice and Parika, creating improved connectivity and greater economic opportunities in those communities.
The announcement was made by Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Abraham Smith during his presentation at the Guyana Energy Conference held at the Guyana Marriott Hotel, Georgetown.
During his address, Smith emphasized the importance of expanding and modernising the company’s network as Guyana accelerates its digital transformation. He noted that reliable digital infrastructure will play a critical role in supporting major national initiatives, including the Wales Gas-to-Energy Project.
Smith revealed that over the past 15 years, the company has invested approximately US$250 million in network development, including US$100 million in fiber infrastructure alone within the last few years. He said that investment will continue, with an additional US$25 million earmarked for domestic fiber expansion in 2026 to ensure the network can meet increasing demand.
“We are also building systems that can hold up under pressure. Resilience is not optional — it is foundational. Energy depends on uptime, finance depends on secure communication, and government depends on digital service delivery,” Smith said.
To enhance reliability, he explained that the company has reconfigured its network topology, strengthened redundancy, and is working more closely with national partners such as the Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) to ensure its systems evolve alongside Guyana’s infrastructure rollout.
He acknowledged that reliability remains a challenge amid the country’s rapid growth and ongoing infrastructure works, noting that teams are deployed daily to respond to issues and improve network performance.
Importantly, Smith stressed that network resilience must extend beyond coastal regions.
“Our investments are not limited to Georgetown. Today, our fiber network serves more than 180,000 homes and businesses nationwide, with nearly 80 percent of our fiber footprint located outside the capital. In 2026, we will continue expanding along emerging economic corridors, including Linden, Parika, the East Coast and Berbice. Opportunity must reach beyond the city limits,” he stated.
The investment will also support the rollout of additional digital services. Smith highlighted platforms such as MMG, which provide easier access to payments and financial services, and referenced the Electronic Transactions Act, which enables telecommunications and other digital providers to expand online services and further drive Guyana’s digital economy.
One Communications (Guyana) Inc., formerly known as Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T), was established in 1991. Over the years, the company has played a significant role in Guyana’s telecommunications development, pioneering fibre-optic technology, installing subsea cables, and expanding its One Fibre network to more than 150,000 homes.
The company says it remains committed to keeping Guyana connected and supporting the nation’s continued growth and digital advancement.
