(Kaieteur News) – Leon De Freitas, a 36-year-old disc jockey, has been committed to stand trial at the next available sitting of the Demerara Assizes for inciting the sexual assault of a 20-year-old woman at Raghoo’s Bar in Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
His co-accused, Ryan Rajnarine, a 30-year-old office assistant and music selector, was discharged after the court upheld a no-case submission filed by his attorney, Bernard Da Silva.
The ruling was handed down on Tuesday at the Friendship Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Tameika Clarke. De Freitas, from Kuru Kururu, Soesdyke-Linden Highway, and Rajnarine, from Soesdyke (Back Road), EBD, were jointly charged with inciting Barry Sullivan to commit rape on the woman. The incident occurred on July 13, 2025, at Raghoo’s Bar in Soesdyke. The charges were laid under Section 3(3) of the Sexual Offences Act, Chapter 8:03.
Sullivan has been committed to stand trial since December 2025, after several weeks on the run. He was arrested on July 28 and subsequently charged in connection with the incident. The no-case submission argued by Da Silva stated that Rajnarine played no part in inciting the act, asserting that he was only following the DJ’s instructions regarding song selection. “Ryan Rajnarine’s name was never uttered by the DJ, nor was his voice used to encourage anyone to commit any criminal act,” the submission read. The defence also noted that in the virtual complaint’s statement, the accused’s name was never mentioned.
The incident drew widespread outrage after a video surfaced showing the woman, who appeared to be drugged, being sexually assaulted by Sullivan. The footage indicated that Sullivan was incited to commit the act by the two accused. The heinous video depicted the woman being sexually assaulted in the bar, with bystanders cheering and recording the scene. The bar has since been shut down by the Guyana Police Force. Police reported that Laura George, Technical Advisor in the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs, took the woman to the Timehri Police Station five days after the incident, where an official report was filed. “The 20-year-old was interviewed by police officers and alleged that she was drugged and raped by three males at Raghoo’s Sports Bar in Soesdyke. The bartender and other persons of interest were arrested.
