(Kaieteur News) – An Albion, Corentyne man lost his home and all his belongings to an early morning fire on Tuesday, which also nearly cost him his life.
Forty-three-year-old Faiam Ally, a welder employed by the Albion Sugar Estate, was reportedly asleep when a fire, believed to have been caused by a gas cylinder, quickly gutted his three-bedroom home.
Kaieteur News visited the scene on Tuesday, where neighbours related that the man had lived there all his life. Having lost both parents, and most recently his wife to separation, Ally stayed in the property alone.
Imran Nasirbage, who along with his family were first responders, told this publication that his 13-year-old daughter was up at 4:30 Tuesday morning for prayers. It was the young lady who sounded the first alarm after observing a reddish glow and noticing that the next-door house was on fire.
“She run out from upstairs and holler ‘daddy, daddy, Faiam house is burning,” he recalled of his daughter.
“I saw no flames, nothing, but when I looked carefully, I was like he doesn’t have red light in his house. (I said) that light is red, that is a fire,” the 13-year-old witness shared.
Startled out of his sleep, Ally panicked and appeared uncertain on his next move, since a significant amount of smoke and fire had already taken over the building. Nasirbage stated that fear overtook him (Ally), and the man was heard screaming and coughing. Despite this, the fear-stricken man had to be shouted at before he moved, while a coordinated effort by neighbours rescued him from the burning building.
“(We) beg him to jump out the window by he deh in the house, he opened the window, and then I had to open the gate to let him jump on the shed, put he foot on the gate, and then jump,” Nasirbage stated as he recounted the rescue operation.
Owing to the urgency of the situation, Ally’s phone was left behind, destroyed along with important documents and home appliances. His car also sustained damages. A nearby property’s wooden sidewall and louvre windows were also affected.
Neighbours had formed a bucket brigade, but the blaze proved too intense. They also told this publication that firefighting units from the nearby Albion Estate arrived but were ineffective in containing the flames. Supporting units from the Rose Hall extinguished the fire, but the man’s entire property was already thoroughly demolished.
It was noted too, that the fire began from the kitchen which was attached to the lower portion. Despite speculations that the fire stemmed from a gas bottle, Guyana Fire Service (GFS) officials have not yet officially determined the cause.
Persons who may want to assist the now homeless man can make contact with his neighbours on 322-1403/663-4363.
