(Kaieteur News) – Have you ever stopped to consider how precise your instruments really are and what impact that accuracy has on the processes in your business? Calibration, which involves comparing the results from the instrument to a recognised, accurate standard, forms the foundation of every successful business, ensuring reliability, consistency and confidence in products and services offered across the oil and gas, health, mining, aviation and construction sectors.
As Guyana experiences rapid industrial growth, the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS), as the country’s National Measurement Institute (NMI), plays a vital role in helping businesses operate efficiently, safely, and in compliance with established standards. By providing traceable calibration services, GNBS supports organisations in maintaining quality, mitigating risks, and meeting regulatory requirements.
Through its Industrial Metrology and Testing (IMT) Department, GNBS offers calibration services across a wide range of areas, including mass, volume, temperature, dimension and pressure. Instruments such as thermometers, pipettes, balances, pressure gauges, measuring tapes, torque wrenches and calipers are routinely submitted to the Bureau’s accredited calibration laboratories by business operators to ensure precise, traceable, and repeatable results. All calibrations are aligned with internationally recognised standards traceable to institutions such as NIST (USA) and PTB (Germany).
With the rapid expansion of industries across our country, calibration remains critical where accurate measurements directly impact operational safety, efficiency, compliance and the quality of products produced. For example, the production of milk products like ice cream requires reliable temperature checks from calibrated thermometers to maintain quality. This is similar for airlines and mechanics that rely on torque wrenches and calipers, and contractors who depend on measuring tapes and other instruments for reliable measurements. Uncalibrated or inaccurate instruments can lead to serious consequences, including customer dissatisfaction, safety hazards, financial losses, and reputational damage. Stakeholders are encouraged to submit their measuring instruments for calibration at the GNBS.
Last year alone, the IMT Department completed 2,790 calibrations, an increase from the previous years. These achievements highlight the Bureau’s ongoing commitment towards ensuring precision, quality, and accountability across local businesses. It also demonstrates the level of confidence businesses have in GNBS services.
Finally, calibrations will be one of the services showcased by the GNBS at the Guyana Energy Conference and Supply Chain Expo, which is scheduled to occur from February 17-20 at the Marriott Hotel, Kingston, Georgetown. A visit to the GNBS booth will provide an ideal opportunity for business owners and professionals to engage directly with the GNBS team to learn and explore future business arrangements.
