(Kaieteur News) – A three-month court battle over the death of an Alness, Corentyne, Berbice woman ended Monday with a $4.4 million settlement.
Divindranauth Seeram, 35, of Ulverston Village, Corentyne, appeared at the Whim Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Tuanna Hardy, confirming that he and the family of the late Donna Punch had reached a financial settlement. Seeram, who had pleaded not guilty to causing death by dangerous driving, was unrepresented in court.
Donna Punch, 65, of Lot 40 Section A, Alness Village, was killed on October 5, 2025, when the rear wheel of a passing lorry dislodged and struck her while she was heading to church with her husband, Pastor Leroy Punch.
Police reports confirmed the lorry was traveling west along the southern drive lane when both of its right-side rear wheels came loose, hitting Punch as she stood at the northern corner of the road. She fell onto the grass parapet and suffered fatal head and body injuries. Public-spirited citizens rushed her to Port Mourant Public Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival. Seeram initially fled the scene but was later apprehended.
During proceedings, Pastor Punch told the court he had agreed to discontinue the case following the financial settlement.
