(Kaieteur News) – A 23-year-old man was on Wednesday remanded to prison on a charge of simple larceny when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The accused, Simon Ifill, a resident of Haley Street, Georgetown, and an employee of Caribbean Cinemas, is charged with stealing a Nintendo gaming console valued $70,000, property of Byanka Barker. The offence allegedly occurred on January 23, 2026, at Mandela Avenue, Georgetown.
Police said Ifill was subsequently arrested, positively identified by the virtual complainant, and later charged with the offence.
Ifill appeared before Magistrate Faith McGusty, who read the charge to him. He pleaded not guilty.
During the proceedings, the prosecutor objected to bail, citing that Ifill, who currently has several matters before the court, was recently released from custody about a week ago, and allegedly committed another offence shortly thereafter.
According to the prosecution’s case, the gaming console had been listed for sale on Facebook Marketplace, and Ifill expressed interest in purchasing it. Arrangements were made for them to meet at Mandela Avenue. After receiving the item without paying, Ifill allegedly attempted to flee on his motorcycle. The complainant reportedly held on to the back of the motorcycle and was dragged approximately 50 feet along the roadway.
The prosecutor further stated that while the accused was attempting to escape, the gaming console fell to the ground. As he returned to retrieve it, his GBTI card reportedly fell, which the complainant recovered.
During the hearing, Magistrate McGusty remarked to the accused, “You seem familiar. Why is your name familiar, sir?” In response, Ifill stated that he had previously appeared before her in relation to charges of damage to property and discharging a loaded firearm without a licence.
As a result, Magistrate McGusty refused bail, citing concerns for public safety. The matter was adjourned to February 18, 2026, for further proceedings.
