(Kaieteur News) – Two farmers were arrested on Monday after illegal shotguns and ammunition were discovered by members of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) during a mobile All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) patrol along the Chenapou Trail, Region Eight.
In a statement, police said the discovery was made around 16:30 hrs. Police said that during the patrol, ranks observed two men walking in a westerly direction “with what appeared to be shotguns on their shoulders”. Upon noticing the police, the men reportedly behaved suspiciously and attempted to conceal the weapons.
Police stated that the individuals were ordered to stop but attempted to flee. They were subsequently apprehended and searched.
Upon the search, a 16-gauge shotgun along with four cartridges was found in the possession of an 18-year-old farmer of Bashville Village, North Pakaraimas. A 20-gauge shotgun and five cartridges were found in the possession of a 54-year-old farmer of the same address. Both men reportedly told police that they were not licensed firearm holders.
The suspects were arrested and escorted to the Kato Police Station, where they were placed into custody. The firearms and ammunition were lodged as evidence pending further investigation.
Investigations are ongoing.
