Kaieteur Sports – Statistician Charwayne Walker is of the view that the recently launched Schools’ Basketball League by Coach Cameron should have the full support of both the government and the private sector to ensure its success.

The visiting US School team and some of their Guyana counterparts at a welcoming function at the Umana Yana.
Walker opined, “Let’s hope that this tournament will expose young players to some overseas opponents.”
He further stated that, in April 1986 the USA High School team Palmettos toured Guyana and engaged both Georgetown and Linden schoolboys in a series of games. That experience proved invaluable for our then upcoming young stars, the likes of former minister David Patterson, Georgetown Skipper Mark Rettemyer, Peter Briggs, Keith Bowen, Eion ‘Wico’ Leitch, Rockcliffe, Longman Duesbury and Vijay Panday.
Walker notes that before the 1986 US High School boys visit, Bishop’s High won back-to-back national schools championship in 1984 and 1985. Keith Bowen was the 1984 finals MVP with a game high 36 points vs Queen’s College in the final at the National Sports Hall.
North Ruimveldt’s Ande Matheson was the tournament’s MVP scoring 101 points from 4 games and pulling down 79 rebounds. Gregory Wyles also played an integral role in that school boys series. Star players for the US school boys included Skipper Todd Johnson, Alberto White and Vincent Johnson.
Walker disclosed that, the 1984 and 1985 national school boys tournament set the stage for Guyana’s dominance against the USA high school boys in 1986. It’s unfortunate that this exchange did not continue but coach Cameron has shown us that with government and private sector they will see light at the end of the tunnel.

(Kaieteur News) – Pres. Ali knows how to have a good time. He is having the time of his life. There he was in a video clip that came to me, disc jockeying, singing, and all starry-eyed dancing.
