Kaieteur Sports – The Trinidad and Tobago spinners tormented defending champions Guyana, who were steamrolled by 8 wickets in a low-scoring battle yesterday when Women’s Blaze T20 cricket continued.
The Trinidad all-spin barrage locked down the champs for 57 all out in the 17th over, led by 15-year-old leg-spinner Shriya Jairam who claimed 4-11.
Guyana, who at one point were in shambles on 42-8, suffered additionally at the hands of the more experienced spinners in Samara Ramnauth (3-10) and Anisa Mohammed (2-8), who kept wickets tumbling; as other options like Brianna Harricharan (1-11) made the most of a wounded Guyana.
Opener Realeanna Grimmond hit 2 fours and a six in the team’s top score of 14, with the Williams’ sisters Latoya (10) and Laurene (10*) the next best run-getters for the champs.
The Twin Island Republic ladies then breezed to 58-2 in the 14th over, guided by knocks from the seasoned duo of Brittany Cooper who ended on 29* (3×4 1×6) and Djenaba Joseph who also finished unbeaten on 27 (2×4).
A wicket apiece for spinner Plaffianna Millington (1-6) and medium-pacer Sheneta Grimmond (1-2), was the best Guyana could produce as they will look to regroup ahead of their next match tomorrow.
Led by their all-star bowling line-up, Leewards defended their score of 118-9 after batting first in the opening game.
In-form all-rounders Qiana Joseph (27), Jahzara Claxton (22) and Tonya Martin (23) led the way, despite Bajans Najanni Cumberbatch (5-15) and Shanika Bruce (2-14) bowling extremely well, but were in the end kept to 87-9.
Asabi Callender (17), skipper Allyiah Alleyne (15) and Eboni Brathwaite (14) could not stop the rampant approach from Leewards.
However, returns from Shawnisha Hector (2-13), skipper Amanda Edwards (2-17), Joseph (2-10), Rozel Liburd (1-17) and Claxton (1-19); sealed an emphatic win for their team thanks to a collective bowling effort.
Wednesday’s round will open with Jamaica battling the Windwards in the morning game, followed by Guyana and Barbados in the afternoon; with Leewards and Windwards wrapping up proceedings under light. (Clifton Ross)
