Kaieteur News – The Government is set to pour more than $221 million into the rehabilitation of the Anna Regina airstrip in Region Two, alongside the construction of a new passenger waiting facility. This is another costly infrastructure push justified as necessary to boost connectivity and tourism along the Essequibo Coast.
Kaieteur News understands that the project, being executed through the Ministry of Public Works, was tendered at the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB) in November 2025, attracting bids from four contractors. The works were divided into two lots.
According to information provided at the time, Lot 1 involves the rehabilitation of the airstrip, and was estimated at $222,467,018, while Lot Two, covers the construction of the waiting facility, and carries an estimate of $28,375,274.
This publication understands that out of the four bids, Lot1 was awarded to Builders Hardware General Supplies and Construction for $194,859,315, and Lot 2 was awarded to ICAN Engineering and Construction for $26,492,494. Together, the works total $221,351,809.
Kaieteur News reported that during a meeting with residents at Charity back in March 2025, Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill had mentioned the government’s plans of upgrading the Anna Regina facility. The Department of Public Information (DPI) reported at the time that the public works minister revealed plans to renovate the facility to include a waiting area, among other features. The airstrip at Anna Regina is located near a popular tourist resort, Lake Mainstay.
The upgrades also aim to encourage and support the increasing tourism sector and economic activity along the Essequibo coast. “Of course, once we do the airstrip, we also have to do the road because we can’t get to the airstrip if we don’t have a road,” the minister said according to DPI. President Irfaan Ali commissioned two newly upgraded hinterland airstrips, one at Aishalton, Region Nine which cost $920 million, and the other at Paramakatoi Village which cost $799 million.
