(Kaieteur News) – President Irfaan Ali has commended United States President Donald Trump’s leadership and reaffirmed Guyana’s support for efforts to combat transnational crime in the region, while U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio reiterated America’s commitment to deepening security cooperation with Guyana to address shared challenges, including illicit narcotics and firearms trafficking.
President Ali and Secretary Rubio made the remarks during an engagement on Tuesday. According to Guyana’s Foreign Secretary, Robert Persaud, discussions focused on recent developments in Venezuela and other issues of importance within the Western Hemisphere. On January 3, the U.S military conducted an operation in Caracas Venezuela which resulted in the arrest of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores. Maduro and Flores were transported to the U.S where they were charged for narco terrorism.
Persaud said President Ali commended both President Trump and Secretary Rubio for reaffirming a shared commitment to freedom, democracy and regional security.
“President Ali reiterated Guyana’s steadfast commitment to working with the United States – the region’s strategic and important security ally. The President re-emphasised Guyana’s support for every effort to combat transnational crime, including drugs and gold smuggling, and narco-terrorism. The President also reiterated Guyana’s respect for the rule of law, free and fair elections, upholding of democratic norms and the furtherance of peace and prosperity for all the people of the region,” Persaud stated.
He added that President Ali also welcomed Secretary Rubio’s reaffirmation of continued U.S. support and partnership with Guyana in the defence of its sovereignty and territorial integrity. Both sides, Persaud noted, committed to remaining engaged on the issues discussed and other areas of mutual interest.
In a separate statement, U.S. Principal Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott said Secretary Rubio spoke with President Ali on further strengthening bilateral security cooperation. Pigott noted that Rubio commended President Ali for his leadership as a regional security partner and for Guyana’s growing role in promoting stability across the hemisphere.
Pigott added that the U.S. reaffirmed its commitment to deepening security cooperation with Guyana to address shared challenges, including illicit narcotics and firearms trafficking, which threaten regional stability and economic resilience.
“Both leaders underscored the importance of continued collaboration to disrupt foreign terrorist organizations and transnational criminal networks while strengthening law enforcement capabilities and border security,” Pigott said.
