(Kaieteur News) – Executive member of the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party, Hana Mohamed has raised an alarm over reports the group has received, regarding squatters being sent to settle on 15 acres of land privately owned by the Mohameds.
The land is owned by Azruddin and Nazar Mohamed, who are both facing sanctions by the United States government over allegations of gold smuggling and tax evasion.
Despite securing the second highest number of votes at the September 2025 elections, Azruddin Mohamed has not been appointed leader of the opposition as he faces an extradition request by the US government.
His sister, Hana has accused the ruling party of orchestrating a calculated and relentless campaign of political persecution, targeting the businessman, his family and other Guyanese.
She explained that on December 31, 2025 the party leader received credible information that the PPP government devised a plan to send squatters onto portions of his privately owned property, located at Little Diamond, East Bank Demerara.
The female Mohamed detailed, “This followed an established pattern of persecution through the deliberate enabling of vulnerable Guyanese to illegally occupy the presumptive opposition leader’s land.”
Further, she pointed out that these actions were publicly circulated and encouraged by a Facebook page associated with the PPP, “Live In Guyana” and aided by PPP-aligned contractors and candidates.
The activist noted that millions of dollars were invested in building materials and equipment, and dozens of workers were hired to erect squatting structures on the property owned by the family.
To this end, she argued, “This was a calculated assault on Azruddin Mohamed’s property rights, intended to undermine his lawful ownership and manipulate public sentiment by suggesting he should surrender his land to the poor.”
The political stunt escalated further, falsely implying that the property had not been legally purchased, with the clear objective of tarnishing the presumptive opposition leader’s reputation, according to his sister.
“These acts were enabled and sanctioned by the PPP, including ministers and senior government officials, demonstrating a deliberate strategy to exploit citizens, distort facts, and politically pressure the presumptive opposition leader,” she added.
The WIN executive reminded that in February 2025, a PPP aligned news outlet fabricated and circulated a false flyer instructing vulnerable citizens to line up at the Mohamed family’s business premises for cash grants. According to her, “this cruel and orchestrated deception was designed to humiliate citizens, mislead the public, and indirectly attack Azruddin Mohamed, while affording the PPP a veneer of plausible deniability.”
She reasoned that a careful examination of these events over the past year, including the public spectacle arrest of the presumptive opposition leader and his 72-year-old father, where he was handcuffed and thrown into the back of a pickup truck by more than a dozen masked men armed with heavy artillery is evident of a systematic targeting of political leader and his family.
She alleged that videos of vehicles owned by the Mohameds continue to be circulated among PPP operatives and sent to police instructing them to stop and harass the drivers unlawfully, with Vice President, Bharrat Jagdeo issuing a public threat holding the police commissioner personally responsible if anyone were injured in an accident involving these vehicles, which the PPP falsely and repeatedly claimed to be non-compliant.
“This has resulted in repeated unlawful stops, the impounding of several of the presumptive Opposition Leader’s family vehicles on fabricated charges, and continuous politically motivated pressure,” according to her. Moreover, she stated that the Special Branch Police and Police Inspectors have also been weaponized to carry out these actions in real time, turning law enforcement into a tool of coercion and political persecution.
In light of these and other events, WIN urged all citizens to remain vigilant against actions that undermine the independence of Parliament, the judiciary, and the principles of fair governance.
