(Kaieteur News) – The University of Guyana (UG) has begun to offer the Associate Degree in Pre-Medical Sciences, the Ministry of Education announced on Friday.
The ministry said the new programme was made possible through recent consultations between Minister of Education, Sonia Parag, Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Paloma Mohamed-Martin, and the Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony.
The ministry stated that at those discussions Minister Parag had stressed on the need for a more structured and accessible pathway into medical training for Guyanese students.
“For years, students interested in pursuing medicine who did not qualify for direct entry were required to spend an additional one or two years in biology, chemistry, or related science programmes that were not specifically tailored to medical training. This new pre-medical sciences programme addresses that gap by providing a structured, purpose-built pathway into medicine and other health-related fields,” the ministry said.
Further, the ministry reported that the programme will be delivered in various regions across Guyana, expanding access and ensuring that students, regardless of location, can benefit.
The Associate Degree in Pre-Medical Sciences provides a strong academic foundation for students seeking entry into medicine, dentistry, and other allied health fields. It is designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and discipline required to succeed in advanced medical training, while expanding opportunities locally and regionally.
Applications are now opened and eligible students are encouraged to apply.
