(Kaieteur News) – A 38-year-old businessman was on Friday remanded to prison for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
Lawrence Joseph called ‘Tuggy’ of Republic Gardens, Georgetown made his first court appearance at the Sparendaam Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Clive Nurse where he was charged with the offences.
According to information provided by the police, the accused pleaded not guilty to both charges and bail denied.
The matter was adjourned to February 20, 2026.
Police in their initial report said that following an operation conducted on January 1, 2026 about 06:30hrs at the Sparendaam/Plaisance Railway Embankment Area, East Coast Demerara, the firearm and ammunition were discovered.
“Acting on information received, ranks intercepted a motorcycle driven by a 38-year-old Businessman of Republic Gardens, Georgetown. A search was conducted on his person during which one (1) suspected .40 Smith & Wesson pistol was found tucked in his waist along with a magazine containing one (1) live suspected .40 round of ammunition,” the police reported.
Joseph was arrested and taken into custody and an investigation launched.
