(Kaieteur News) – Deputy Chief Elections Officer (DCEO) of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), Aneal Giddings has tendered his resignation.
In a brief interview with Kaieteur News, Giddings confirmed his resignation, following the circulation of media reports. He noted that his resignation will be effective January 2026.
The Deputy Chief Elections Officer declined to comment on the reason for his decision to end his employment with the elections commission. He also refused to share information on his next step, even as reports indicate that Giddings will be heading to the National Data Management Authority (NDMA), another state agency. He said, “I won’t be able to confirm that. I prefer not to speak about all that at the moment. In time it will come out.”
Giddings has been employed with GECOM as DCEO since 2023. He previously served as Information Technology (IT) Manager of the elections body. The Commission’s decision to appoint Giddings was met with objections from opposition-nominated commissioner, Vincent Alexander who had accused GECOM of failing to follow the required criteria for the appointment.
At the time Alexander claimed that GECOM had for the third time skipped the mandatory protocol to appoint Giddings, whom he described at the time as a People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) preferred candidate to the position of DCEO.
He explained then that when the position was originally advertised, another candidate met the requirements but was not appointed. Alexander claimed that the position was nevertheless re-advertised. This, he said resulted in Giddings, who was at the time of applying, one year short of the required experience being placed under consideration.
