(Kaieteur News) – Minister of Education Sonia Parag is condemning a series of social-media videos showing students of a particular school engaging in what she describes as “inappropriate and vulgar behaviour.”
“The Ministry of Education DOES NOT condone such conduct by students, whether at a Christmas Social or any school-related activity,” the minister stated.
She noted that the Deputy Chief Education Officer (Admin) had previously issued clear instructions to head teachers and HMs to ensure proper supervision and control of all Christmas Socials. “It follows, therefore, that those responsible for supervising these events must be held accountable,” she said. “Students must also desist from such behaviour.”
Reinforcing the long-held principle that it takes a village to raise a child, Minister Parag urged all stakeholders to play their part: “At every level, we must work together to discourage negative behaviour and promote the values we expect in our schools.”
Former Housing Minister, Annette Ferguson also condemned the party scenes. In a Facebook post she said as a national leader and an aunt of school-aged children, “I am deeply disturbed by the content of this video, which appears to have been recorded in a school setting somewhere in Guyana. This behaviour is unacceptable and wholly inconsistent with the values, discipline, and character we expect of students who attend school to learn and to prepare themselves to become responsible women and men in our society.”
Ferguson said from all indications, the students in the video were unsupervised, and the incident occurred within a classroom. “Such conduct, if left unchecked, can easily escalate into other harmful behaviours. The statistics already show that our young people between the ages of 15 and 24 account for approximately 14 percent of new HIV infections. This is a worrying trend and a reminder that the choices our youth make today carry serious, long-term consequences.”
“I am not here to judge these students. However, the time has come for our society to speak up and speak out against behaviours that place our young people at risk. Silence will only worsen the situation, while accountability and guidance can help save the lives and futures of our youth,” Ferguson said.
She added: “I am certain that many of the students seen in this video do not display such behaviour at home, but peer pressure remains a powerful influence. As parents, we must begin these conversations at the breakfast table. While teachers have a clear responsibility in the classroom, we in the home must also fulfill our duty to instill discipline, values, and self-respect.
I therefore call on the relevant authorities, particularly the Ministry of Education, to conduct a thorough investigation into this troubling incident and to take the necessary steps to address this immoral and inappropriate behaviour. The time for action is now.”
