(Kaieteur News) – A 24-year-old canter driver, on Tuesday, was granted $800,000 bail when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on allegations of stealing more than $3 million in textile and construction fabrics.
Condell Padmore, of Lot 106 New Housing Scheme, Sparendaam, East Coast Demerara, is accused of committing two counts of simple larceny on November 26 and 28 on the East Bank of Demerara. The alleged victims are Shaheed Persaud and Gavin Jeffery.
Padmore appeared before acting Chief Magistrate, Faith McGusty, who read the charges to him. The court heard that on November 26, Padmore stole ten rolls of construction fabric valued at $1.5 million from Persaud at Plantation Road, East Bank Demerara. The second charge alleges that on November 28, he stole a quantity of textile fabric worth $1.4 million from Jeffery at Houston, EBD. He pleaded not guilty to both charges.
Padmore’s attorney, Melvin Duke, sought bail, arguing that his client was simply carrying out instructions related to his job. Duke told the court that Padmore received a call from someone he worked with, instructing him to pick up the materials and transport them to various locations. The attorney maintained his client’s innocence, noting that Padmore had no knowledge that he was stealing the items.
Duke acknowledged that Padmore had previously been charged with similar offences but emphasised that he “walked free with no pending matters,” adding that his client is not a flight risk.
However, the prosecution objected to bail, pointing out that Padmore is “no stranger to the law.” The prosecutor indicated that he had prior charges, including robbery, although they could not confirm whether he had been convicted in those cases.
The court was also informed that investigators have video footage showing Padmore committing the crime on one of the occasions and that one of the victims confirmed he never gave anyone permission to remove the items. Prosecution added that none of the stolen materials have been recovered.
Given the opportunity to address the court, Padmore insisted that he was instructed by his employer to collect and deliver the items. He claimed he was told to take one set of materials to an area “north-east, close to Cemetery Road,” and the other to a location “east,” claiming that he is unfamiliar with locations in Georgetown. He also claimed that after his arrest, he showed the police where the items had been delivered.
After considering the arguments, Magistrate McGusty granted Padmore $400,000 bail on each charge and ordered him to report to the Agricola Police Station every third Friday of the month. The matter was adjourned to January 14 for further proceedings.
