Kaieteur Sports – The countdown to the year-end football spectacle is officially on, as the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) confirmed the draws for the eagerly anticipated Super-16 Cup, unveiling a structured and strategic format that promises intense competition at the National Training Centre (NTC) in Providence.
The tournament kicks off this Saturday, December 6, with every match slated for the NTC, culminating on New Year’s Day (January 1) with the grand finale.
Opening weekend fixtures are expected to be released on tomorrow.
According to the GFF, this year’s Super-16 Cup brings together the nation’s premier Elite League clubs and standout Regional Member Association (RMA) teams.
The competition will feature a split, round-robin group phase that determines which eight lower-seeded teams advance to the quarter-finals.
The top four finishers from the recently concluded Elite League Season 7 have been automatically seeded into the quarter-final stage, bypassing the early rounds.
These Elite League giants were placed in separate groups to anchor the draw:
Group A: Slingerz Football Club (Elite League Champions)
Group B: Western Tigers FC
Group C: Guyana Police Force FC
Group D: Guyana Defence Force FC
The remaining 12 clubs, featuring the 5th to 9th placed Elite League finishers and seven RMA squads, were drawn into three-team groups to battle for a spot against the seeded heavyweights.
Elite League Clubs (5th–9th) in Group Phase:
Monedderlust FC (Group A)
Den Amstel (Group B)
Santos FC (Group C)
Ann’s Grove (Group D)
Fruta Conquerors FC (Group C)
Regional Member Association Teams:
Group A: Strikers FC (Rupununi FA), Buxton Stars (East Coast FA)
Group B: Beacon FC (Georgetown FA), Zeelugt Defenders FC (West Demerara FA)
Group C: Camptown FC (Georgetown FA)
Group D: Mahaica Determinators (East Coast FA), Uitvlugt Warriors FC (West Demerara FA)
The winners of these initial four groups will advance to the tournament semi-finals, set along predetermined paths, with Group A winner facing the Group C winner, while the Group B winner meets the Group D winner.
According to the GFF, $2M awaits the champions, $1M for the runners-up, $750,000 for third place, and G$500,000 for fourth.
