Former National basketball Coach Bernard Daniels has died
Kaieteur Sports – Former National Basketball Coach Bernard Daniels has died. Statistician Charwayne Walker informed that Daniels coached Guyana to the bronze medal at the 2000 Caricom Championships in Barbados with Lugard Mohan as the team’s captain.
Daniels was coach of Globetrotters Basketball team and was instrumental in the development of players like Dr Lancelot Loncke and Remmington Ram.
The late Bernard Daniels and Statistician Charwayne Walker at the recently concluded Caribbean Women’s Basketball Championship at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The late Coach migrated to the US and returned to Guyana last year after spending over 25 years there. Walker tells that, Daniels was the brother-in-law of former Guyana captain and Caricom all-star centre Hewley Harry.
The 2000 National Basketball team that the late Bernard Daniels coached to the bronze medal at the Caricom event included local standouts in the game like Lugard Mohan the Captain from the Ravens Club, Orin Mohan (Ravens), Dr Lancelot Loncke (Globetrotters), Remmington Ram (Globetrotters), Lorenzo Withrite (Colts), Steven Nurse (DC Jammers), Dexter Martin (DC Jammers), Darren Ainsworth (DC Jammers), Sherwin Devonish (DC Jammers), Andrew Ifill (Colts – deceased), Deryck Boyd (DC Jammers – deceased) and Steve Neils jr. (Kings).
Coach Bernard Daniels was assisted by Robert Cadogan Assistant Coach.
Walker notes that DC Jammers’ Wayne Bristol was originally selected but was replaced by Steve Neils jr. in that team. Condolences is extended to his family and friends.
