The Hinterland Women had a decent debut match and will be looking to continue their development as the competition continues
Kaieteur Sports – The powerhouse Berbice Women’s team steamrolled newcomers, Hinterland Women by 8 runs yesterday at Lusignan Ground, when the opening round managed to sneak in some much-needed playing time despite overnight and morning showers.
Rain reduced the match to 20 overs per-side with the Hinterland ladies taking first strike, which resulted in them being knocked over for 34 all out in the 10th over.
Opener, top-scorer and the batsman to reach double figures; Malina Peters a good debut, scoring 16 with one six as seven of her teammates fell for a duck.
The Hinterland Women were also aided by 12 extra runs from the Berbicians, who bowled extremely well under tough conditions.
Berbice’s all-star lineup showed out, with CWI T20 Blaze Player of the 2024-25 season, off-spinner Plaffiana Millington grabbing 3-5, as Captain Sheneta Grimmond (2-4) and Danielle Manns (2-1) ran roughshod.
A wicket each from Tiea Isaacs (1-1) and Daniella Hicks (1-15) sealed a comprehensive bowling outing for Berbice, who were easily guided to 35-2 in just 5.3 overs.
With light work to do, openers Crystal Durant who ended on 8* and top-scorer Jada Fraser with two fours in her 13 off 16 deliveries, sealed the game for Grimmond (3*) and her ladies.
Bowling for the women from Hinterland, Tifeny LaRose snared 2-10 to help pull the game back, but with 11 extras and star-studded Berbice batting order; the order turned out to be too tall as they will seek to regroup ahead of the next round.
Action continues today, weather permitting with a clash between Demerara and Essequibo at the Lusignan Ground from 9:00h. (Clifton Ross)
