20th Diamond Mineral Water Indoor Hockey Tournament pushes off with high-scoring openers

Kaieteur Sports – The 20th edition of the Diamond Mineral Water International Indoor Hockey Tournament got underway on Thursday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, with GCC The Sequel, GBTI GCC, Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), GCC Vintage, and Pepsi Hikers taking first strike in this year’s competition.

GCC The Sequel delivered a commanding performance in the tournament’s first match, crushing OFHC Expendable 8–1 in the Men’s Over-40 division. The Sequel started brightly, striking twice within the opening two minutes. OFHC pulled one back in the 11th minute through Jason De Santos, but that was as close as they would get.

Kevin Spencer turned up the pressure, scoring two quick goals before halftime, and returned in the second half to add four more. OFHC managed a second consolation, but goals from Orland Semple and another from Spencer in the 29th and 30th minutes sealed the emphatic win. Spencer finished the evening with a remarkable seven-goal haul.

In Match 2, GBTI GCC earned a 3–1 victory over Hikers in the Women’s Open division. Hikers struck first through Kenisha Wills in the sixth minute, but GCC captain Gabriela Xavier equalised nine minutes later, sending the teams into halftime level.

A goalless third quarter set up a tense finish, but Abosaide Cadogan broke the deadlock early in the fourth to give GCC the lead. Marzana Fiedtkou sealed the result in the 33rd minute, securing a confident 3–1 win for the GCC ladies.

TTPS claimed a narrow 3–2 victory over Hot Flashes in another Women’s Open affair. Trinidadian standout Brittney Hingh was the star of the match, completing a hat trick with goals in the 4th, 14th, and 24th minutes to put TTPS ahead 3–0.

Hot Flashes mounted a late surge, scoring twice in the 38th and 40th minutes, but the clock ran out on their comeback as TTPS held on for the win.

GCC Vintage comfortably defeated The Legends 6–1 in the Men’s Over-50 division. Philip Fernandes netted twice and Alan Fernandes added another to hand Vintage a 3–0 halftime lead. The Legends found a consolation goal early in the second half, but Devin Hooper took over the match, scoring a hat trick in the 26th minute and adding two more in the 28th to complete the 6–1 rout.

The TTPS Men continued Trinidad’s winning form, defeating Saints 4–1 in the Men’s Open division. Dwain Quan Chan (8’), Akim Toussaint (21’), and Darnell Trancoso (29’) gave TTPS a solid cushion before Shakeem Fausette pulled one back for Saints. Toussaint completed his double in the 39th minute to close out the match.

After that, Hikers outgun Bounty GCC in 16-goal thriller, Hikers stormed back from an early 2–0 deficit to defeat Bounty GCC 11–5. After GCC’s strong start, Hikers drew level by the 12th minute. GCC briefly regained the lead at 3–2, but from there Hikers took full control, rattling in seven unanswered goals to move ahead 10–4.

GCC added a fifth, but Hikers struck once more to seal the 11–5 victory. Robert France produced a standout performance for the Hikers, scoring three goals in just two minutes.

The tournament is sponsored by Diamond Mineral Water, with support from ANSA McAL Tropical Rhythm and Trophy Stall Trophy Centre. Action continued yesterday, and more detailed coverage will appear in a subsequent edition.
