(Kaieteur News) – The Ministry of Public Works is moving ahead with a major upgrade to the Anna Regina airstrip in Region Two, unveiling plans to rehabilitate the runway and construct a new passenger waiting facility, a project valued at just over $250 million.
According to documents from the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB), the project has been divided into two lots. Lot One, covering the rehabilitation of the airstrip, is estimated at $222,467,018, while Lot Two, dedicated to constructing the waiting facility, carries an estimate of $28,375,274. Together, the works total $250,842,292.
At the reading of bids, four contractors have applied for the contract. The companies are: Technocon Investments – Lot1 $ 223,099,380 and Lot2 $38,686,709; Builders Hardware, General Supplies and Construction- Lot1 $194,859,315 and Lot2 $29,921,483; ICAN Engineering & Construction – Lot1 $199,709,685 and Lot2 $26,492,494; Vijay Persaud & Sons Contracting Services – Lot1 $212,911,178 and Lot2 $31,316,335.
This publication understands that during a meeting with residents at Charity back in March 2025, Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill had mentioned the government’s plans of upgrading the Anna Regina facility.
The Department of Public Information (DPI) reported at the time that the public works minister revealed plans to renovate the facility to include a waiting area, among other features. The airstrip at Anna Regina is located near a popular tourist resort, Lake Mainstay.
The upgrades also aim to encourage and support the increasing tourism sector and economic activity along the Essequibo coast. “Of course, once we do the airstrip, we also have to do the road because we can’t get to the airstrip if we don’t have a road,” the minister said according to DPI. While plans to upgrade the Anna Regina facility move forward, the government is also looking to construct a new airstrip at Charity.
