(Kaieteur News) – A 22-year-old biker died on Thursday after he was struck by a pickup truck at Barrack Retreat Corridor, Lethem, Region Nine.
The deceased has been identified as Barth Paul, a young husband and father, of St. Ignatius Village. He worked as a porter at the Lethem Regional Hospital.
According to a police report, the accident occurred around 13:00 hrs. and involved Paul’s Brazil-registered motorcycle, PYP 7J16, and a Brazil-registered pickup, OAA 8G45, driven by a 46-year-old Brazilian national of Central Lethem.
Preliminary police investigations revealed that Paul was travelling west along the southern carriageway, while the pickup was heading north on the western side of the roadway. At the junction where their paths intersected, the two vehicles collided. Police stated, “as a result, the motorcyclist fell onto the roadway and sustained injuries to his head and about his body.”
Emergency Medical Technicians responded and transported Paul to the Lethem Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. His body was subsequently taken to the hospital’s mortuary, where it awaits a post-mortem examination. The driver of the pickup is currently in custody as investigations continue.
Meanwhile, the community of Lethem, along with Paul’s friends and family, has been plunged into mourning. Having recently celebrated his birthday on October 10, the young man leaves behind his partner and their son.
His friend and colleague, Simon Naume, described him as a humble and generous individual. She recalled feeling devastated upon hearing the news:
“He was very kind, willing, and humble. When I heard about his death, waves of disbelief hit me because I had only spoken to him the day before. I saw one of my colleagues’ status saying RIP and it was him. I felt shocked. I couldn’t believe it—I cried right away. I feel so hurt and I still can’t believe it up to this time,” she told Kaieteur News.
