(Kaieteur News) – Guyanese soca artist Nesta Nelson is adding fuel to the Mashramani fire with her latest release, “Things I Like,” a vibrant track inspired by the iconic Kevin Little hit “Turn Me On.”
The new single, now available on all streaming platforms, showcases Nelson’s signature style while paying homage to a Caribbean classic that has resonated across generations. The inspiration struck when Nelson revisited Chris Brown’s version of the beloved track, sparking a creative vision to reimagine it with her own melodic twist while maintaining the chord progression that made the original so memorable.
“Things I Like” represents a true collaboration of Guyanese talent. Nelson joined forces with producer Timon Fraser and fellow Guyanese artist Kapashanti, who is based in New York, to blend their creative energies and authentic Guyanese lingo into what Nelson describes as a masterpiece. The synergy between the artists was evident in the recording process as the track was built in just five minutes, with lyrics completed in a remarkable 20 minutes.
With Mashramani rapidly approaching, Nelson’s strategic timing couldn’t be better. “I wanted to maintain relevancy and have material out for every season,” she explained, positioning herself as an artist committed to staying connected with her audience year-round.
But Nelson’s ambitions extend beyond seasonal releases. The artist is currently working on an EP slated for release next year, promising fans a more comprehensive body of work that will showcase her artistic range and evolution.
Nelson’s musical journey is rooted deep in Guyanese culture. Beginning her craft at just three years old, she grew up in a musical family and quickly made her mark on the competitive scene. Her first major win came in 1995, the same year she performed at the opening of the then Buxton Community High. At just five years old, she sang before the late President Cheddi Jagan, who encouraged her mother to nurture Nesta’s musical gift, advice that would shape her entire career trajectory.
Throughout her school years, Nelson dominated the children’s Mashramani Calypso competition, claiming victory an impressive 14 times. She continued her winning streak by capturing the Junior Calypso Monarch title in both 2007 and 2008. During this period, she connected with Malcolm Ferreira and recorded her first track at age 16, marking her transition from competition stages to the recording studio.
Now a seasoned artist “married to the craft,” Nelson hopes “Things I Like” will become a Mashramani season anthem, opening doors to shows and bookings throughout the season and beyond. As the soca scene heats up and revelers prepare for Guyana’s biggest celebration, Nesta Nelson is ready to provide the soundtrack.
