(Kaieteur News) – The Ministry of Public Works announced on Thursday that a $350 million emergency land-clearing campaign is underway at the long-neglected Le Repentir Cemetery, a burial ground that has for years drawn public outrage over its jungle-like state and decaying surroundings.
According to the ministry, 98 small contractors have been mobilised to tackle the overgrown vegetation that has overtaken large sections of the cemetery. The works carry a four-to-six-week timeline, and form part of a broader national push to rehabilitate cemeteries across Guyana.
The Public Works Ministry noted that rehabilitation of the cemetery was a major concern raised during the 12th Parliament and Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill had outlined a number of interventions to have the area rehabilitation. Prior to clearing the lands, the ministry has since undertaken works on the main access roads and other internal roads in the cemetery and completed the installation of fencing. This publication understands that the land clearing aspect of the restoration project is ongoing along with drainage works being done along the perimeter of the cemetery.
