(Kaieteur News) – The Guyana Prison Service (GPS) has begun testing electronic ankle bracelets to better monitor inmates, the agency announced on Wednesday via Facebook.
“The GPS has implemented the testing of electronic ankle bracelets to better monitor inmates who perform work within and outside the prison facility,” the statement read. Director of Prisons, Nicklon Elliot said that this form of technology can potentially revolutionise the way the GPS monitors and rehabilitates incarcerated individuals, specifically the ones involved in the various rehabilitation programmes. “By utilising advanced technology, these devices will allow prison officers to know the exact location of the inmate and alert them quickly if they are outside the authorized zone,” the director stressed.
The tamper resistant bracelet device will be work around the ankles and must be worn at all times. Signals will be communicated to the monitoring station using radio frequency signals. Director Elliot indicated that he will continue to engage the Home Affairs Minister to ensure that the programme expands to cover the key priority areas, creating real impact in the lives of inmates and the community.
