Driver charged after fatal Sparendaam crash

(Kaieteur News) – A 29-year-old man was charged and granted bail of $600,000 on Wednesday for causing death by dangerous driving, following a fatal collision on the Sparendaam Public Road, East Coast Demerara.

Adrian Evans, of Prince William Street, Plaisance, appeared before Senior Magistrate Clive Nurse at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court. He was also charged with the prohibition of tinted glass, to which he pleaded not guilty and was granted $25,000 bail.

Evans was not required to plead to the death by dangerous driving charge and was placed on $600,000 bail; in addition, he was required to lodge his passport and to report to the Sparendaam Police Station every first Friday until the completion of the matter. He also pleaded not guilty to the charge ‘prohibition of tinted glass’, and was placed on $25,000 bail. This matter was adjourned to December 23, 2025.

Police reported that the fatal crash occurred on Sunday November 9, 2025 at around 02:30hrs involving Evans’ motor car #PAB 2495 and motorcycle #CP 5910 driven by Steven Kumar, 32 of Block 12, Non Pareil, E.C.D. Investigation into the incident revealed that Evans’ car was headed east along the southern driving lane of the northern carriageway while the motorcycle was headed west along the northern driving lane of the southern carriageway. The motor car reportedly made a right turn at the intersection of the said public road, resulting in a collision with the motorcycle.

As a result of the impact, Kumar fell onto the roadway sustaining several injuries, which included lacerations and a broken right leg. He was picked up in an unconscious state and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was admitted a patient. He succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday November 11, 2025, around 03:30hrs, while still receiving treatment for his injuries at the Intensive Care Unit.

An alcohol level of 0.04 micrograms was detected in the system of Evans when he was subjected to a breathalyser test. On Wednesday, a post mortem examination on Evans’ body gave the cause of death as multiple injuries consistent with a motor vehicle accident.
