(Kaieteur News) – The Ministry of Public Works has announced that the $3 billion Diamond/Grove to Good Success road project is officially completed.
According to information provided by the ministry, the $3 billion project was done in six lots and executed by contractors: Lot 1. SSS Professional Engineering Services Inc; Lot 2. Shereaz Bacchus General Contractor; Lot 3. Khemraj Nauth Inc; Lot 4. Sawa Investments Inc; Lot 5. Japarts Construction Inc; and Lot 6. Ivor Allen (lighting works).
The ministry stated that the project catered for the demolition of the existing carriageway which was then reconstructed and widened by 9.14 m to a new width of 17.14 m. The scope of work entailed comprehensive construction activities including excavation to a depth of 62 inches, followed by the placement and compaction of highway materials.
“The works employed advanced geotechnical and geosynthetic technologies such as geotextile reinforcement, geocell confinement and a specially formulated asphalt mixture designed to endure the high traffic loads characteristic of the East Bank Corridor,” the ministry explained.
Kaieteur News had reported that bids for the project were awarded late last year by the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB) and works commenced earlier this year.
The Public Works Ministry had previously stated that the significance of upgrading the East Bank corridor is that the thoroughfare has endured significant stress resulting from both the volume of vehicular traffic, as well as, the weight of trucks, and both articulated and non-articulated vehicles.
“This has resulted in, at different times, and different locations, the development of bulges and depressions along the roadway,” the ministry had said in a previous statement.
With the new roadway now reconstructed and widened, it can comfortably handle the high volume of traffic and reduce commute time. This publication understands that the completion of this $3 billion project did not go without challenges. These include the relocation of utilities and the high volume of traffic during construction which affected the pace of works by contractors. During the process, the ministry had to divert traffic to alternative routes which were also rehabilitated. It was reported that this road project was financed by the Government of Guyana and forms part of the wider rehabilitation project of the East Bank roadway. It was reported that the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) is financing the upgrade of the East Bank of Demerara roadway from Good Success to Timehri. Works on that section is currently ongoing.
