(Kaieteur News) – The PPPC Government has succeeded in waving its magic wand and getting the same result. Its Central Executive member, Mae Toussiant Jr., Thomas has vanished from sight.
Her role as permanent secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, one who allegedly helped the Mohameds family in their alleged corrupt activities, made headlines.
Whenever the Mohameds name were mentioned in certain contexts, the name Mae Thomas also appeared. Now the PPPC Government has miraculously wiped the slate clean of the former permanent secretary as if she didn’t exist, as if she never had one dealing with the Mohameds on anything. When the US Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC) sanctions were announced in June 2024, Thomas was in the thick of them, with some details shared about how she allegedly used the power of her office to aid and help the Mohameds in their criminal enterprises.
By even the most lenient consideration, serious developments involving the most senior public servant in a ministry, one who sits just below the political head of that ministry, the minister. As alleged, Thomas betrayed the high office that she held, and in which significant trust is placed. The sanctions came, and pushed the PPPC Government into a tight corner. The government’s shifting from one foot to the other started around then.
She was moved, then she was sent on leave, then she resigned from the much-coveted position that she held with the PPP, that of Central Executive member. Guyanese allowed themselves to be lulled into a state of comfortable reassurance. The government was showing its strength and applying the whip, no matter who it was that had to be disciplined. What time has introduced to Guyanese is how smooth the leadership of the PPPC Government can be.
There was no addressing head-on the alleged criminal activity of Thomas. The PPPC Government was playing a game and playing for time, and it has won the final rounds so far. Because when the indictments and 11 charges against the Mohameds were announced almost a year and four months after the OFAC sanctions against the Mohameds and Thomas, former PS Thomas wasn’t in them. What happened to Thomas, and how was it that she fell out the US law enforcement net?
How could the US Government attorneys have fouled up matters with Thomas so much, or were they just following what came down? If so, how did that mystery come about, and who on Guyana plotted that development, piloted it to where matters stand now: no Thomas mentioned anywhere for anything. The OFAC sanctions wrapped Thomas with the Mohameds in their many different criminal activities, and all as alleged. It would take a lot of conversations to cut Thomas loose, where only two are charged, and the third whose fingerprints were gathered by US investigators is coddled and taken care of. It could be that she has agreed to be in some government-arranged Witness Protection Program, one based here.
We think that it is less of that, and more of the PPPC Government protecting one of its assets, and signaling something else at the same time to its nervous and watching comrades. The message from the PPPC Government is that ‘we lookout for our own, take care of them, protect secrets’. That has to be comforting to the legions of its corrupt agents in the government. Whatever has to be done is done, and in the case of Thomas, the fallen permanent secretary, there wasn’t even any nuance in how the government went about getting her sprung. If it was a regular criminal setup involving street criminals, it would be called an official pardon at best, or a get-out-of-jail card, at worst.
Where’s the fairness in this? The Mohameds are forced to walk through a ring of fire, and hauled before the courts. It shouldn’t be otherwise, because whoever did a crime must pay the time. Does not that exact same standard also apply to Thomas, or has she been granted immunity, except that no one in the PPPC Government bothered to share that with the public? These are the double standards that now flourish under the PPPC Government, and they are called law, justice, and democracy’s principles.
