Kaieteur Sports – After his well-documented administrative hurdles, Guyanese swimmer Delroy Tyrrell is representing Guyana at the Islamic Solidarity Games currently taking place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia where he has advanced to the semifinal of the men’s 50 meters backstroke event.
Tyrrell, who represents the Dorado Speed Swim Club, became one of three Guyanese swimmers who have made semifinals at these Games. The others were Andrew Fowler who competed in the 2017 Islamic Solidarity Games in Baku, Azerbaijan and made the semifinals of the men’s 50m freestyle and Onan Thom who won a bronze medal in the 50m backstroke at the 2005 Islamic Solidarity Games in Jeddah.
Tyrrell recorded the 15th of 16 qualifying times of 27.97 in his Heat and will look to lower that time for a chance to medal. Homer Abbasi of Iran was the leading qualifier with 25.92.
Tyrrell has been a standout performer at both US collegiate and regional levels. His selection to represent Guyana marks a significant moment for the local swimming programme, which has struggled in recent years to maintain consistent athlete participation at international competitions.
The Islamic Solidarity Games, for Tyrrell presents not only an opportunity to compete against world-class athletes from across the world but also to reaffirm his commitment to elevating Guyana’s name in the pool.
