(Kaieteur News) – The Orthopaedic Department of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) has marked a remarkable achievement, successfully performing 28 joint replacement surgeries over an intensive three-day initiative from November 7–10, 2025.
Led by Dr. Kaaleshwar Ramcharran and a dedicated team of orthopaedic surgeons, anesthetists, physiotherapists, nurses, and operating theatre staff, the department surpassed its target of 27 surgeries, completing 18 knee replacements and 10 hip replacements. A total of 22 female and 6 male patients benefited, gaining restored mobility and relief from severe joint pain.
In a statement the GPHC said joint replacement surgeries are among the most transformative orthopaedic procedures, significantly improving quality of life for patients. In private facilities, these surgeries can cost around GYD $2.5 million each, highlighting the immense value of GPHC’s initiative for patients who received care free of cost.

A total of 22 female and 6 male patients benefited, gaining restored mobility and relief from severe joint pain.
“The successful completion of this intensive surgical schedule demonstrates the department’s growing capacity, efficiency, and commitment to delivering world-class orthopaedic care in Guyana. It also reflects GPHC’s ongoing investment in advancing surgical services, enhancing patient outcomes, and reducing waiting lists for essential procedures. To date, all patients who benefited from the replacement surgeries have been discharged,” GPHC said.
“The management of GPHC extends heartfelt appreciation to the orthopaedic team for their dedication, teamwork, and continued service in improving the lives of citizens through compassionate and expert care,” the release concluded.
