Kaieteur Sports – Riding like a boss and the defending champion he is, National Cyclist, Mario Washington, belted the field to win the second annual Mayoral Cycle Road Race around the town of New Amsterdam.
The successful event was organised by the Flying Ace Cycle Club (FACC) of Berbice. It was held as part of New Amsterdam Town Day Anniversary celebration in observance of the town’s 134th Anniversary.

The race pedaled off at the Esplanade Park at the junction of Vryheid Street and Esplanade Road. Mayor Wainwright McIntosh led the cyclists for one lap around the town. The riders were then sent on their way by Mayor McIntosh at the junction of Republic Road and Carlos Place.
The peloton then proceeded along Republic Road, turn left into Vryheid Street then left into Main Road, proceeded along Main road through Stanleytown, turn left into Tacama Turn, left into Republic Road for 8 laps before finishing at the point of origin.
The race, which was for cyclists in Region’s 5 and 6, was off to a blistering start. However, Washington took command early and dominated for the rest of the event, distancing himself with every pedal. As he produced his fireworks along the way riding all alone in the blistering midafternoon sun.
The presentation of awards was done immediately after the completion of the event.

Washington took all six prime point prizes available.
A close battle saw Junior Niles taking second prize with Jaikarran Sookhai third.
Niles was the first veteran to cross the finishing line with Sookhai second, Syborne Fernandes third and Samuel Mootoo fourth.
Sidwell Sandy had some setbacks as he suffered a puncture but returned to take the top junior award. Dinesh Sookhai won in the juvenile category.
Franco Crawford Jnr. made full use of the new bike as he rode home first in the beginner’s category with Sachin Premkaran placing second.
There were some special awards for cyclists in the Masters Category who were racing for a long time or returning to racing due to the efforts of Franco Crawford Senior. Crawford himself led the way with Deon David, Shurland SuHang, Kaiso David and Prem Karran receiving awards.
Special prizes went to BMX riders Jeremy Sinclair, Justin Singh, Jaden Gladstone and Joziah Erskine and Kaden Gladstone.
Mayor McIntosh in a short thank you speech, expressed gratitude to the FACC for organizing the race, Coordinator Randolph Roberts, all the sponsors and the general public for their support. He also had special words of thanks to the New Amsterdam Town Day Committee and the Guyana Police Force. Among the sponsors were Mayor Mc Intosh himself, Banks DIH Limited, Sukhpaul Gas Station, 4S Security Service and Building Enterprises, A. Ally’s and Sons business enterprise, J.G Bagot &Trim Contracting & Real Estate Company, Home design & Associates, Franco Crawford Trucking Service, Regional Democratic Council Region 6 among others.
