Cop shot dead by businessman laid to rest

(Kaieteur News) – Lance Corporal Richard Hayes, the policeman who was killed by a businessman just outside the Vreed-en-Hoop stelling, was laid to rest on Saturday.

Minister of Home Affairs Oneidge Waldron attended Hayes funeral and expressed condolences on behalf of President Irfaan Ali and the government of Guyana.

“I joined the family, colleagues, and friends of the late Lance Corporal Richard Hayes to pay my final respects to a devoted officer. My heartfelt condolences go out to his loved ones during this difficult time,” the minister said on her Facebook page.

Hayes, 35, of Lot 13 School Street, Vreed-en-Hoop was shot and killed by Robert Hossein of Crane Housing Scheme, West Coast Demerara during a confrontation at Hossein’s cellular phone stall at the Vreed-en-Hoop Stelling on October 23.

The businessman appeared at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrates’ Court on October 27 where he was charged with manslaughter and placed on $1million bail.

Hoosein, 37, is a licensed firearm holder of a .32 Taurus pistol. According to police reports, Hayes who was attached to the Impact Base at Brickdam Police Station, had visited the suspect’s shop on October 22 (Wednesday) to enquire about purchasing cellphones and left shortly after.

However, around 09:00hrs on October 23, Hayes reportedly returned to the stall, indicating he had come to buy a phone. The suspect told police that while he was packing boxes, Hayes became “hostile”, prompting him to ask the officer to leave. The businessman alleged that Hayes instead picked up a cellphone heater gun from the display counter and threw it at him, striking him in the chest. In response, the suspect reportedly drew his firearm and discharged one round, hitting Hayes in his right chest.

A video of the shooting showed that the policeman and the businessman were in heated conversation and the police picked up an object and threw it at the businessman who reached for his weapon and shot the policeman in his chest.
