(Kaieteur News) – A Venezuelan national is among three persons arrested in connection with the bombing of the Mobil Fuel Station, Regent and King Streets, Georgetown on Sunday which claimed the life of six-year-old Soraya Bourne and injured seven others.
In a statement, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) said that investigators have made significant progress but the prime suspect remains at large.
“Earlier today, acting on intelligence and CCTV analysis, investigators conducted a coordinated operation that led to the interception of a silver motor car (PSS 7874) which was used to transport one of the suspects. The vehicle was subsequently located and the three mentioned individuals were arrested and are in custody,” police said.
The GPF said that the information obtained from the trio “has provided key leads to investigators.”
Notwithstanding, “the principal suspect… is being actively sought”.
A wanted bulletin has been issued for the suspect, who is believed to be a foreign national whose primary language is Spanish. No name has been provided for the suspect.
“The Guyana Police Force urges anyone who may have seen or interacted with this individual or who may have information on his whereabouts to contact the nearest police station or call 911 immediately,” the statement said.
Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) showed the suspect, clad in a blue jersey, what appeared to be black trousers and a khaki hat, entering the gas station and first attempting to place a bulky black bag in a bin located at a pump station. An attendant, who was seated there, forbade him from placing the bag in the bin. The man then ventured to the area of the fuel station where it is reported that cooking gas was stored.
Shortly after, the car little Soraya Bourne and her family traveled in was seen slowly reversing before the bomb exploded causing the girl and her relatives to be pitched into the air.
The GPF has since released an Artificial Intelligence (AI) enhanced image of the suspect.
Meanwhile, police said that investigators are still assessing the scene and noted that several buildings including the Mobil minimart, storage bond, and four fuel pumps, as well as the KFC outlet, adjoining commercial establishments and portions of the High Court were damaged from the impact of the blast.
“Experts from the Forensic Science Laboratory have collected samples, including plastic and metal fragments which are being analysed to determine their origin and evidential value.
The Guyana Police Force remains resolute and diligent in advancing this investigation. Every effort is being made to bring those responsible to justice and to safeguard the lives and property of all citizens,” the police said.
