(Kaieteur News) – Is like Jagdeo just wake up and holler, “We gon regulate gambling!”—as if he just discover that the world round and people does lose money in games of chance. Dem boys seh, this sudden revelation had people spitting out dem tea and rolling till dem ribs nearly crack. Because who really unleash this beast pon we? None other than the same PPPC that now hollering ‘regulations!’ like a man trying to shut the stable door after the horse done gallop halfway to Suriname.
When gambling first tek root in Guyana, it wasn’t no accident. It was policy. Dem boys remember good-good when the PPPC roll out the red carpet for de lotto company, scratch cards, and casinos. Every time dem talk development, was casino talk in the mix. Remember the Marriott? That big fancy hotel that was supposed to turn profits from the slot machines and the roulette tables? That was the plan, bai! Gambling wasn’t a problem then. It was an “investment” to make the hotel profitable, except de money was not there at de time.
Now Jagdeo seh people getting addicted, spending dem last lil pay trying to hit it big. Dem boys seh that true, but leh we call spade a spade. Who open the gate and let the cow out?
When yuh plant the seed of gambling, don’t bawl when the weed tek over yuh whole yard. Some ah dem young men does brush dem teeth outside the betting shop, eat lunch by the lotto booth, and sleep dreaming of lucky numbers. That didn’t start yesterday. That start when government give gambling legitimacy, polish it up nice-nice, and call it “entertainment.”
But hear the best part. Dem boys hear Jagdeo seh new regulations coming to curb this thing. Dem laugh till tears run down. Because yuh really believe them casinos in fancy hotels gon feel them regulations? Nah bai. Those doors gon stay open, air condition still blowing, and champagne still popping. The only people gon get “regulated” is the man trying to win back he taxi fare at the corner shop.
Dem boys want to put a lil wager on it: these regulations gon protect, not punish, the big players. Because in Guyana, all gamblers equal, but some gamblers more equal than others.
Burnham did try to clamp down on gambling once, and all he do was drive it underground. Now it back, legalised and sanitised, wearing a tuxedo.
So dem boys seh, PPPC better be careful it don’t bite its own tongue or stump its toe. Because when yuh build a casino culture and call it progress, don’t be surprise when the house always wins.
Talk half. Leff half.
