Sand Creek Village to get $69M maternal waiting home

(Kaieteur News) – The Ministry of Health is set to spend approximately $69 million to construct a maternal waiting home at Sand Creek Village, in Region Nine.

Information released by the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB) office has revealed that following the national competitive bidding process, Ash Civil Engineering Works secured the $69,045,002 contract.

This maternal waiting home is one of several the ministry intends to build in remote communities, to ensure pregnant women have access to essential healthcare services.

Kaieteur News understands that when completed, the maternal waiting home will complement the new Sand Creek District Hospital.

Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony has noted the importance of maternal waiting homes close to hinterland hospitals, stating that it will help eliminate the challenges mothers from far-flung villages face.

“Let’s say if someone was pregnant and they had to come to a hospital, it would be very challenging because if you are pregnant and you leave when you are going into labour, more than likely by the time you get to the hospital, you will probably deliver the baby en route to the hospital,” he said.

While commissioning a similar $46 million waiting home in Mabaruma, Region One earlier this year, the minister related that the facility was equipped with trained staff to provide support and monitor the health of both mothers and their babies even after delivery. It was reported that constructing maternal waiting homes forms part of the government’s efforts to ensure health equality while reducing maternal mortality.

The construction and renovation of health facilities are part of the government’s broader efforts to decentralise and expand healthcare services provided to Guyanese.

This year, the health ministry was allocated some $120.9 billion to execute its projects and programmes across the country.
