In honour of the Month of the Elderly which is observed in October, the National Veterans Rest Home (NVRH) located at Lamaha Springs Georgetown, hosted a series of activities on Thursday aimed at recognising the invaluable contributions of the men and women who once served in the Joint Services.
Among the activities organised was a Media Sit-In. This session provided residents with a platform to share their experiences and reflections on military service, offering insights that form an important part of the nation’s defence history. Through their stories, the veterans highlighted the dedication, resilience, and sacrifices of those who helped shape the early years of Guyana’s defence and security forces.
This was followed by a Thanksgiving Church Service and Luncheon, which brought together veterans, staff, and invited guests in an atmosphere of gratitude and fellowship. The event featured musical selections by the GDF Band, including songs specially requested by the veterans, and an appreciation segment acknowledging their invaluable contributions to the Force and the nation.
In attendance were Lieutenant Colonel Dr. Notoya Lewis-Frank, NVRH Administrator Mrs. La-Sean Semple, Board Chairman Lieutenant Colonel (Ret’d) Lelon Saul, Force Welfare Officer Mr. Jermain Hamilton, Legions Welfare Officer Warrant Officer Class One (Ret’d) Clay Fatts, and family members of the veterans.
In his remarks, the Chairman expressed heartfelt gratitude to the residents for their dedicated service to the nation, emphasizing the importance of enhancing service delivery and fostering a more care-centered approach to improve their overall well-being. He also reflected on the vision that led to the establishment of the NVRH in 2011.
The month-long observance will culminate with a Games Day on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, at the NVH. This event promises to be a lively and enjoyable occasion, fostering camaraderie, friendly competition, and the well-being of the veterans.
Moreover, this year’s celebrations hold special significance, coinciding with the 60th Anniversary of the Guyana Defence Force.
Many of the veterans at the Home proudly served during the formative years of the Joint Services and contributed significantly to the GDF’s growth and traditions. Their service continues to inspire the men and women currently serving in the Force, standing as a testament to the values of loyalty, discipline, and patriotism that define the GDF today.
Through these activities, the GDF reaffirms its commitment to honouring veterans recognising not only their past service to the nation but also their enduring influence on the Force’s identity and mission. (Source: GDF Facebook page)
