Man charged with murder of 15-year-old stepson

(Kaieteur News) – A 49-year-old labourer from the West Coast of Demerara, Balram Bessessar, called “Navin,” has been remanded to prison for the brutal murder of his 15-year-old stepson, Sudesh Singh.

Bessessar, of Stewartville, West Coast Demerara, was arrested on October 3, 2025, after allegedly chopping to death Singh, also known as “Joel,” at their family home in Stewartville. He was subsequently charged with murder.

According to a police statement issued on Thursday, Bessessar appeared before Magistrate Singh at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrates’ Court, where the indictable charge was read to him. He was not required to enter a plea and was remanded to prison. The case was adjourned to October 10, 2025, for further proceedings.

Police investigations revealed that the fatal confrontation stemmed from a dispute over a bicycle. Reports indicate that the teen had borrowed his stepfather’s bicycle, during which the chain reportedly slipped off. When confronted, an argument ensued between the two.

During the altercation, the suspect allegedly ran into the kitchen, armed himself with a cutlass, and returned to attack Singh, chopping him three times in the neck. After the incident, Bessessar reportedly walked out of the yard and turned himself in at the Leonora Police Station, where he was arrested.

Police said that upon arriving at the scene, they found the teen lying motionless under the house, face-up and bleeding from multiple neck wounds. A cutlass was discovered near his body. Singh’s remains were taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital for examination before being transported to the Ezekiel Funeral Parlour.
