Kaieteur News – The Forward Guyana Movement (FGM) on Friday renewed its call for the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) to provide clarification on the registration and participation of Commonwealth citizens in the 2025 General and Regional Elections.
In a statement, the party expressed concern over GECOM’s failure to respond to its initial request on the matter. FGM has now given the Commission seven days to formally acknowledge the request and provide a comprehensive response.
According to FGM, its leader Amanza Walton-Desir wrote to GECOM Chair Justice (Ret’d) Claudette Singh and all Commissioners on September 10, 2025, seeking detailed information. To date, the party said, only Commissioner Vincent Alexander has acknowledged the correspondence, while the Secretariat of the Chairperson confirmed receipt but has not issued a formal response.
The party’s request seeks clarity on several key points, including: The total number of registered voters qualified as Commonwealth citizens resident and domiciled in Guyana; a breakdown of these voters by country of origin; the number of Commonwealth citizens who voted, disaggregated by country of origin; the statutory or regulatory provisions under which they were registered and permitted to vote; copies of any internal guidelines or directives issued by GECOM staff regarding the registration, verification, or voting process applicable to Commonwealth citizens.
Walton-Desir stressed that the request is rooted in FGM’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and strengthening public confidence in the electoral process.
“Timely clarity from GECOM on these questions is not only important to political stakeholders, but also to the Guyanese public at large, who deserve assurance that all aspects of the electoral process are conducted within the law and with fairness,” she said.
FGM confirmed that copies of the request were also forwarded to international electoral observer missions, including the European Union, Commonwealth Secretariat, Organization of American States (OAS), and Carter Center.
The Movement reiterated its intention to continue engaging institutions “in a respectful but firm manner” to safeguard electoral integrity and uphold democratic credibility in Guyana.
In its earlier letter, Walton-Desir underscored the significance of the issue: “The integrity of our electoral system depends on clarity, transparency, and accountability. Guyanese citizens must be assured that their democratic will is not frustrated or diluted by the participation of foreign nationals. The people of Guyana deserve to know under what authority Commonwealth citizens were registered and how their participation was administered.”
