Kaieteur News – The Ministry of Education on Thursday announced that a rapid-response task force has been established to tackle utilities issues facing schools across the country.
According to the ministry, both subject minister Sonia Parag and Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation, Deodat Indar met on Thursday to address the issues facing the schools.
“Consequently, the Ministers have formed a rapid-response task force to tackle these issues, along with what seems to be the systematic destruction of several water distribution networks in the hinterland region,” the ministry noted.

Minister of Education, Sonia Parag and Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation, Deodat Indar and a team of officials at a meeting on Thursday to address utilities issues facing schools across the country.
Even as investigations continue with the hope of apprehending and prosecuting the perpetrators responsible, the ministers and their teams discussed ways in which both immediate and long-term relief can be brought to the residents, teachers and students.
In the coming weeks, the ministry explained that the established taskforce will examine repairs to the damaged infrastructure, enhanced security at key locations such as the water wells, and importantly, the construction of water reservoirs, which will provide a more resilient and sustainable solution for over 250 communities and satellite villages in the Hinterland, especially during the dry season.
Kaieteur News reported earlier this week, that schools in Micobie Village, Region Eight had to be closed due to the lack of water. Toshao Julie Singh had informed this publication that the entire village was is experiencing a water disruption.
Addressing the issue, the Guyana Water Inc. noted that they are currently establishing a spring water catchment system to bring the much-needed water supply to the village. Works on that system is expected to be completed within a week, GWI said in a statement.
Further, the Education Ministry noted that in addition to the hinterland water supply issues, Ministers Parag and Indar also went through a list of all schools from Regions One to 10 that have issues with utilities.
“In addition to water issues, several electrical issues in schools across the regions were highlighted. Minister Indar has assured Minister Parag that all of the issues that fall within his remit will be remedied within six weeks’ time,” the ministry reported.
The minister and her team are committed to partnering with other government ministries and agencies to ensure that all issues affecting students and teachers are resolved as quickly as possible.
