US$7M Tourism and Hospitality Institute to be completed by June 2026

The Tourism and Hospitality Institute which is under construction in Region Six

Kaieteur News – The US$7 million Tourism and Hospitality Institute, which is currently under construction in Port Mourant, Region Six is expected to be completed by June next year, Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Susan Rodrigues.

On Wednesday Rodrigues, along with officials of her ministry, visited the project site and provided an update on the works. The ministry in a statement on its Facebook page expressed concern about the pace of the project while noting that the facility will play a critical role in supporting Guyana’s emerging tourism industry.

With the number of hotels currently under construction, along with the government’s plans to attract even greater investment in the sector, Minister Rodrigues said that there is a demand for a skilled and well-trained workforce.

“This world-class facility, with the capacity to train 200 persons per cohort, will offer Caribbean Vocational Qualifications in areas ranging from mixology to cosmetology. We recognize that a growing sector requires a skilled workforce, and as a proactive government, we are ensuring that Guyanese are well-positioned to benefit from this expanding industry, while simultaneously building national capacity,” the minister said.

The sod was turned for the construction of the US$7,002,126 Hospitality and Tourism Training Institute in February 2024. The project is being funded by the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) in collaboration with the Ministries of Education, Finance, and Tourism.

Kares Engineering Inc. and architectural engineers, Deen and Partners, were awarded the contract.

Additionally, Kaieteur News reported that the institute, when completed, is geared at training personnel to ensure that they are equipped with the skills and knowledge that are necessary to staff and manage the country’s growing tourism and hospitality sector.

At the sod-turning ceremony, then Minister of Tourism Oneidge Walrond had said the institute is aimed at equipping students with hands-on training in a world-class facility that would enhance their knowledge of the sector, including modern approaches required to operate at international industry standards.
