Kaieteur News – A 24-year-old miner has admitted to killing his drinking buddy between 23:45 hrs on Saturday and 00:30 hrs on Sunday, at Blue Mountain Backdam, Region Seven.
Police identified the dead man as Fitrawle McLeannon, called ‘Cripple’, a 28-year-old miner of Lot 106 Ocean Garden, Meten-Meer-Zorg, East Bank Essequibo. Police have arrested his alleged killer identified as Shamer Tobin of Moruca, Northwest District, Region One. Tobin reportedly told police, “”Me and the man was drinking, and I was high, and de man box me, and I bore him about three times. Afterward, I went back to camp and put on my long boots, and I roll out.”
Investigators learnt that McLeannon, the suspect, and miners went to a dredge owner’s camp during early Saturday evening. The suspect and the victim reportedly began drinking and “gaffing” with each other until 23:45 hrs.
They, along with the other miners reportedly returned to their respective camps.
However, a short while later, one of the miners heard a loud scream and upon checking, saw McLeannon, lying on the ground a short distance away from the kitchen area on the trail, bleeding profusely, while the suspect was walking away.
Police said based on their inquiries, the victim allegedly slapped the suspect three times and he (the suspect) retaliated by stabbing him (the victim) three times.
The suspect, before police arrested him, had also reportedly confessed to one of his workmates that he had stabbed the McLeannon and left him on the ground.
Ranks arrived hours later to investigate the killing. They observed McLeannons body before removing it from the crime scene and noted that it bore a stab wound to the abdomen, another to the left hip and one to his back. Crime sleuths also removed a small pink scissors from the scene believed to be a murder weapon.
The suspect was later nabbed during a cordon and search exercise at Marawah Backdam, Cuyuni River, Region Seven.
Investigations are ongoing.
