Springer leads Guyana’s charge at Pan Am U20 Championships

Kaieteur Sports – The Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) has named a strong team for the upcoming Pan American U20 Athletics Championships, set for October 3–5 in Villavicencio, Colombia, with the spotlight firmly on rising star Tianna Springer.

Springer, the reigning Commonwealth Youth Games 400m champion and two-time CARIFTA Games gold medalist, will make her debut at the Championship and enters as one of the most exciting young athletes in her event.

Currently ranked 18th in the Pan Am U20 list with a season’s best of 53.07s, the 17-year-old will carry Guyana’s hopes of returning to the podium for the first time in over a decade.

Guyana’s journey at the Pan Am U20s dates back to 1993, when the then five-year-old championship was staged in Canada.

That year, Najuma Fletcher etched her name in history, becoming the first Guyanese athlete to win a medal at the event. She captured bronze in the women’s heptathlon, setting the tone for future generations.

Fourteen years later, at the 2007 edition in São Paulo, Brazil, sprinter Dax Danns blazed to 21.20s in the men’s 200m, racing his way to another bronze for Guyana.

The medal tally grew again in 2011, when long jumper Rolyce Boston soared 7.35m to secure bronze in the men’s long jump, marking Guyana’s most recent podium finish at the Championships.

Joining Springer in Colombia will be a talented squad spanning sprints, middle distance, and field events. Rodel Greene, ranked 24th in the triple jump with a best mark of 15.50m, will look to make an impression in the sandpit.

In the sprints, Tishawn Easton and Skylar Charles will double in the 100m (10.54s, ranked 110) and 200m (21.04s, ranked 51), adding speed to the team’s roster. Onesi Dunn also lines up in the men’s 100m with a season’s best of 10.54s.

Over two laps, middle-distance duo Javon Roberts (1:52.39, ranked 128) and Kaidon Persaud (1:52.56, ranked 138) will carry the national colors in the men’s 800m.

With Springer leading the charge and a crop of determined young athletes ready to test themselves against the best from the Americas, the AAG will be hoping Colombia becomes the stage where Guyana’s long wait for Pan Am U20 glory finally comes to an end.
