Kaieteur News – The 20th China Medical Team for Guyana is set to wrap up its one-year service in the country by mid-September this year and return to China. Since 1993, at the invitation of the government of Guyana, Jiangsu Province of China has been continuously dispatching medical teams to Guyana, with members carrying out their work at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) and the Linden Hospital Complex (LHC) respectively.
Over the past three decades, batch after batch of medical team members have adhered to the spirit of the Chinese medical team—”Braving hardships, being willing to dedicate, healing the sick and saving lives, and showing boundless love”. They have introduced new medical technologies to the local area, brought benefits to the Guyanese people, and written a brilliant chapter of China-Guyana cooperation and friendship.
The 20th China Medical Team for Guyana arrived in the country in September 2024. Comprising 16 members, the team covers a wide range of specialties, including general surgery, orthopedics, nephrology, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, ophthalmology, anesthesiology, burn and plastic surgery, radiology, and pathology. The team has been providing medical services at GPHC and LHC.
During their tenure in Guyana, the Chinese doctors have innovated the assistance model. Through diversified measures such as clinical technology empowerment, talent training, and free medical outreach programs, they have successfully promoted a profound shift in the assistance work from a “blood transfusion” model to a “blood formation” model.
Relying on technical platforms such as the Minimally Invasive Surgery Center, Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery Center, Ophthalmology Center, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Center, and Hernia Center, the team has achieved remarkable results as of now. At the GPHC and the LHC, they have conducted approximately 11,130 outpatient consultations, performed 2,034 elective and emergency surgeries, successfully treated 155 critically ill patients, and provided 2,898 TCM treatments.
Additionally, the medical team has carried out more than 140 clinical teaching sessions. Several technologies introduced by the team, including fluorescent laparoscopy, electronic analgesic pumps for childbirth, minimally invasive acetabular fracture surgery, etc., have successfully filled multiple gaps in the local medical field. These efforts have effectively elevated Guyana’s healthcare standards to a new level and made significant contributions to improving the well-being of the local people. Beyond training batches of local healthcare professionals, the team has also continuously offered Chinese wisdom and solutions to address local health challenges. Over the past year, medical supplies worth more than US$400,000 has been donated to Guyana through the Chinese Medical Team, continuing to write a new chapter of China-Guyana friendship with great compassion.

The 20th China Medical Team for Guyana has steadily advanced the China-Guyana joint healthcare talent training program. Through surgical demonstrations, teaching rounds, case discussions, and centralized lectures, they have completed the pre-study training for 7 senior local doctors who are scheduled to pursue further studies in China. This initiative aims to help Guyana build a “sustainable medical team that will never leave”.
In collaboration with Guyana’s Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs, the medical team regularly organizes free medical outreach and medicine distribution activities. The “Healthy Village” series of free medical outreach activities has covered multiple regions across Guyana, with over 10 sessions held. These activities have alleviated the local shortage of medical resources and personnel, enabling local residents to access convenient medical services. In addition, the Chinese medical team has also carried out more than 10 free medical outreaches for local communities and institutions in spare time.
Furthermore, the medical team has partnered with West Demerara Regional Hospital, to launch the “Chinese Medical Team Surgery Day” program. They regularly send team members to conduct multi-disciplinary surgical outreach. As needed, the team provides training to local medical staff through surgical practice, simulation operations, and consultations on difficult cases, covering specialties such as general surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, anesthesiology, and plastic surgery. This effort has enhanced the diagnostic and treatment capabilities of hospitals in the West Demerara region and brought benefits to the local people. To date, more than 20 complex surgeries have been completed under this program, driving the development of primary healthcare in Guyana.
The work of the 20thChina Medical Team for Guyana has received wide acclaim from Guyana’s government agencies, health authorities, and all sectors of society. Guyana’s Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony, Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Hugh Todd, and Minister of Amerindian Affairs Ms. Pauline Sukhai have all expressed their gratitude and high praise for the Chinese medical team on various occasions. With their exquisite medical skills and selfless love, the 20th China Medical Team for Guyana has built a bridge of people-to-people connectivity and injected strong health-driven momentum into the building of the China-Guyana community with a shared future.
