Kaieteur News – Vice Chair of Region 10 and a We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) candidate Mark Goring has attributed the party’s victory in that region to the hard work and determination of his team.
Goring told Kaieteur News on Thursday that while he is proud of WIN for its momentous achievement, he is humbled by the results. He said the significant achievement by the new political party to dominate Region 10, a stronghold of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) deserves it commendations.
“We were able to win this election because of one, the love that the people have for Mr. Azruddin Mohamed, it was truly remarkable, but the work had to be put in to really bring out the people and galvanize them, because the same love is being shown to him throughout the country, but in Region 10, it takes a special team of volunteers and strong leadership from myself to really bring it home,” he explained.
Goring told this publication that from very early in the election season, it was recognised that WIN had no institution as a newly formed party and so they were not able to immediately identify its support base.
To remedy this, the party created a data collection form which volunteers from Ituni to Rivers View used to gather data. It is through these forms that the party was able determine the support areas and the areas where work needed to be done.
“So, for instance, in the Berbice River, what we recognized very early in that data collection is a number of villages, or nearly all the villages, were displaced from where they normally vote. Apparently, GECOM boundaries were shifting, or they only employed the original. I don’t know what happened but we call it displaced voters, because half of places like Wiruni had to go down to Sand Hills, which is a long way. If you don’t have a boat, you can’t vote, that was simply it,” he explained.
The Preliminary List of Electors (PLE) was printed and sent to all of these outlying villages, so checks could be made ensuring that every voter was on the list. In some instances, it was recognised that persons in at least half of the villages had to go to polling stations at a different location.
“They normally vote at Wiruni, but now they have to vote till in San Anassi,” Goring highlighted while adding
He added that, “One of GECOM’s staff gave me an explanation for it, which doesn’t make much sense to me, because every election people vote in one area why change it now in such a critical election? And so, we were able to track down every voter that supported WIN, find out where they are voting, and then we were able to mobilize. I was able to do a transportation budget and mobilize our supporters who had to leave from Ituni and go to Wiruni and vote, some had to go to Ebini and vote, and it was very tedious.”
Nevertheless, the work was put in and a plan placed in motion to address the issues identified. WIN won the region in what Goring termed a ‘landslide victory’. WIN secured 10,458 votes, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) a coalition of parties including the PNCR secured 5334 votes while the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) secured 4260 votes.
Goring said the task at hand was not easy. He explained that campaigning to convince the electorate was a mammoth task since many were afraid to support another party. However, he said he used his understanding of the geography of the region to convince residents of Ituni to Aroaima, the Mines to Great Falls to Muritaro, from Ebini to Anarika to Kawkaw, Rivers View to support a new cause.
“Look them in their eye and let them know that the narrative that the current government is putting out about Mr. Azruddin Mohamed. While we all know that he’s sanctioned, the sanction does not affect you in any way,” Goring said.
Goring said too that the party aired a live programme on social media every Tuesday and Thursday at 19:00h to speak to the people of Region 10.
“Of course, because of campaigning, I wasn’t able to do it consistently at the time that I put, but I was able to do it whenever I can, even if it’s 9 o’clock or 10 o’clock in the night, to talk to the people. Let them know that I believe in this, and even if it worth me losing my visa, which I know I wouldn’t, it doesn’t matter, because this is my hometown, and I want to fight for that. Instead of protecting a visa for another country, this is my home, and I will fight for this to the last,” he said.
The Region 10 representative is elated that his party was able to amass the number of votes noting that it is an experience the party will cherish forever.
“It’s now dawning on me this is something that many have tried to do for decades… and within a short space of time, I was able to quickly get a team, and that team was able to work tirelessly and bring home a victory. Something that one person told me in Region 10 would never happen… ‘Region 10 is too true to the PNC for you to actually make an impact,” he said.
Goring continued, “Literally, I believe 500 more votes and we would have taken all the parliamentary seats, and three more votes we would have gotten and we would have gotten 10 seats in the Regional Council…so it was extremely, a remarkable performance, and we’re gonna build on that.”
He said that the new political party is aware of its blessings and is on a mission to expand its support base. Goring assured that the WIN leadership is one that will govern with a difference and will represent all of Region 10.
